I am currently Academic Vice President of Digital Programs & Innovation and a Professor of Biblical Studies at George Fox University, where I help lead our university through teaching innovation, assessment, promotion of faculty scholarship, and more. I care about reaching learners in every situation—in deep discussion around seminar tables, as readers of academic content, as listeners through popular outlets like podcasts, as students in digital courses, and as viewers on YouTube. As a scholar, my work focuses on ancient languages and literatures and their reception in the modern world. I am a first generation college student, and my PhD is from Harvard University in Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations. I’ve written six solo-authored academic books, co-edited a major volume about the ancient Phoenicians, and published many other journal articles, essays, and book chapters. I’ve worked on an archaeological excavation in Israel, acted as an academic guest expert on TV for the History Channel and Travel Channel, wrote my doctoral dissertation as a stay-at-home dad to an infant, co-hosted a nationally recognized podcast, and tried and failed to summit Mt. Hood several times.
